There's nothing gourmet about chili dogs but you know who happens to love the darned things so it's reason enough for me to put them on the dinner menu every so often. Chili dogs weren't exactly a popular item where I grew up but they're Big Guy's definition of comfort food ...not finger food.
I don't know much about them, but I do know the chili on a dog is a lot different than any other kind in that it is definitely sweeter, has a different texture and there isn't a bean to be found. What I do know for sure is that I should have handed the apron over to Big Guy a long time ago because he came up with this version.
Obviously from the look of his plate he was more than satisfied with the results of his efforts.
Big Guy’s Chili Dog Chili an original from JBug’s Kitchen Antics
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 large onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 pound extra lean ground beef
1 tablespoon chili powder
1-1/2 teaspoons cumin
1 tablespoon sweet paprika
1/2 teaspoon cayenne
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons molasses
1 – 14 ounce can diced tomatoes, drained and pureed
1 tablespoon tomato paste
1/2 cup barbecue sauce
Water if needed
Salt & course ground black pepper to taste
Heat oil in a large sauté pan over medium high. Add onion and garlic and cook, stirring often, until onion is transparent. Add ground beef and cook, crumbling with a fork until meat is browned. Add chili powder, cumin, paprika, cayenne, dry mustard and sauté for 1 minute, stirring constantly. Add Worcestershire sauce, molasses, pureed tomatoes, tomato paste and barbecue sauce. Simmer for 15 minutes adding water if mixture is too thick. Taste for seasoning adding salt and pepper as required.
T and BG have a lot in common. Is that two dogs on the same bun?

You're right and yes it is.

Actually it was three dogs on two buns. But two on one makes me sound a little less piggish.

Oink, oink ....like you worry about that. There's all kinds of piggies in blankets around here

Every once in a while you just need to eat a hot dog - they are so tasty and delicious - and good for the soul!

You're right Lea, they are and Big Guy could eat 'em every day. Too bad they don't like me so much.
