Hard to believe that anything edible could be harvested at this time of year. I mean you're listening to a transplanted Canadian here and where I'm from about the only thing you could harvest right now would be the odd bottle of champagne from the snow bank. That's why it seemed important for some bizarre reason, to point out the fact that we're able to harvest some of our leafy greens to make our dinner salad last night.
Thanks to some diligent covering during recent visits from a desert dwelling old man winter, our leaf lettuce grew like crazy over the past rainy cold couple of weeks and yielded a salad of epic proportions last night along with another bag chock a block full of the stuff.
I swear there's nothing better than fresh from your garden lettuce and all of ours came from 2 little pots on the patio. The screening you see in the pictures is there to keep the dogs from mowing it down - they'd eat every bite of it in a flash given a chance, as they'd rather have lettuce (especially romaine), than cookies ....almost. Anyway, the Big Guy harvested the goods but left the roots along with about 2 inches of stocks, and we'll be picking more of the tender flavorful greens in a scant 3 or 4 weeks. Ah geez - sorry, I'm bragging again aren't I?
The Big Guy whipped up a salad to accompany more of the cheater meat pies like the ones we had the other night but this time instead of chicken, crans and nuts, I used leftover picadillo I had hiding in the freezer for an occasion such as this. We'll be having more of the yummy little bundles because you can use almost anything as a filling, plus we just love the darn things!
A year ago - Apple Walnut Salad with Caramelized Pork
I was just thinking today that I need to grow some lettuce in pots on the porch!! I'm sure it's too late to start now, but I plan to look into this for next year.

I harvested my last leaf about 2 months ago. I am a bit envious...maybe I need to think about moving my lettuce pot into the house this time of year.

Lea - I suppose now would be the right time to admit we bought them already started in pots, and just transplanted them! There... my goody-two-shoes reputation is still intact. I cannot tell a lie and neither can I take credit for something I'm not responsible for. LOL
Lorraine - they survived some really cold nights in the 20's but I simply covered the whole thing with an old sheet and and they survived. A miracle!
