Yesterday was a wonderful day off from the kitchen. The big guy came home with a bunch of clams from his early morning trip to Waldport Bay, then he cooked me breakfast AND lunch and then took me out for dinner. So what did I contribute to the day – just my sunny personality and not much else. He even let me beat him at dominoes and believe you me I’m not a person that often wins “bored” games. I guess it just must have been my day.
The Salty
Dawg’s been a Waldport fixture for many years and something has to be said for a
place that’s survived a multitude of economic ups and downs. While the big
guy’s wanted to try it out ever since we’ve been coming to the beach, it’s
taken 4 years for us to get there. You see we did go in one day but I had my
snob suit on and didn’t like the looks of it. Well was I stupid! The atmosphere is loud, boisterous and
unpretentious, the view of Alsea Bay is second to none, the people are
unbelievably friendly and the food is wonderful. What more can you ask for? I
mean if you want a 5 course meal cooked by a renowned French chef, then you’re
in the wrong place.
As you can
see from the pics we kinda’ dug into dinner before we remembered to take
pictures. The big guy had calamari and
clam strips with chips and coleslaw. Both the calamari and the clam strips were
tender and flavorful, coated in a light beer batter. Conversation was at a
minimum so you can assume they must have been fabulous.
I ordered
the fish and chips and believe you me I was certainly not disappointed. The fish
was breaded in panko and deep fried to a crisp golden finish on the outside and
moist and flakey on the inside. The fries – well if I’d closed my eyes and
heard a British accent, I could swear I was on the south coast of jolly old
enjoying a mess’ a chips. Served with malt vinegar they were absolutely
addictive. The slaw was no slouch either – in fact I’d say the big guy and I
can’t wait to get back there to try out some of their other items. The people
in the booth behind us were regulars and just happened to be from Albuquerque.
While she had ordered some rather beautifully fried chicken (or as they call it
here “broasted”), he was enjoying great looking Mexican food. What does that
tell ya when a New Mexico native orders Mexican food in Oregon? It’s gotta’ be
good right?
This looks like a great joint for some good chow!

You know June, I'm going to send you a bill for the road trip that I'm going to need to take after reading your Oregon exploits. I have no willpower, when it comes to fried things served on the coast. Good thing my truck will only make it to Tacoma.

Tom - we mentioned you often during our month on the coast cause the big guy really wanted to pick your brain re gardening. As for me, I just wanted the chance to fatten you up. We'll be back there next year. Buy a new truck and come visit would ya?!!!
