After a day of tormenting the neighbors with the smell of brisket cookin' on the barby, dinner last night was exceptional, especially since we shared it with some great friends. Growing up, Sunday dinners were the ones that Mother would really fuss over, and if we were ever having company for dinner, nine times out of ten it would be then. To this day I love Sunday dinners.
Per usual, the big guy's brisket was cooked to perfection. He's loathe to share the secrets from his outdoor kitchen, but he's going to have to turn over a new leaf because as our friend Diana so aptly put it last night, he needs to pass along his skills to the "younger generation". (Dev and Diana are a decade and a half younger than we are and rub it in whenever they can...ha). Hey, we love them anyway, so while the big guy's barbecue sauce recipe is definitely not forthcoming, here's a couple of pictures of one of his three charcoal barbecues along with the famous brisket. Do you think that's enough educat'in?
We enjoyed a warm potato salad, grilled corn and some juicy sliced tomatoes along with the brisket. Dessert was a special request from GMan aka the big guy, Black Bottom Banana Cream Pie. This pie is something else! I really believe it may just be the one thing that kept the big guy from sending me back to Canada during the first year of our marriage. Hey, I was homesick and everything was different - even the labels on the Campbells Soup cans. The good thing is, 9 years later he still loves me as much as he loves this pie (I think).
A homemade chocolate crust is covered with chocolate ganache, then layered with bananas and vanilla pastry cream. Topped with whipped cream and garnished with a dusting of cocoa powder, it's a site to behold and even more of a treat to the tastebuds. And you know what? It's even better the second day. Diana - we loved having you here for dinner and laughs, and appreciate your wanting to hang with us old folks. Ha. Re lemonade - guess we'll have to share the recipe one of these days, eh?
Mags - thanks for your visit! Yes, the pie is delish and hit all the breakfast food groups, but I chickened out and had blueberries instead. We did however finish the pie last night - made the scale scream bloody murder this morning...at least something was screaming...oh, that was ME!
