Hey when you're only at the beach for one month out of a whole year, you've got to take advantage of all of Neptune's wares. Dungeness crab is native to the Pacific Northwest and can be found from Alaska to California. It is incredibly sweet, mild flavored and a perfect treat. Although GMan and I are also recent converts to king crab, dungeness is still the crab of choice when we're feeling like a splurge. In fact, our first picnic together and the very first time I'd ever had fresh crab, was at Short Sands Beach south of Arch Cape on the Oregon Coast. We had crab, bread and wine. I thought I'd died and gone to heaven, and you know what? I was right!
Yesterday, we took advantage of the seafood tent sale at Ray's Market in Waldport and lucky for us, it didn't require that we change into our Bonnie and Clyde alter egos before we went shopping. What a sale! Great deals on dover sole, fresh wild halibut, yellowfin tuna and most important, dungeness crab. At $5.99 a pound, we couldn't pass it up.
SInce our weekend guests didn't check in until close to day's end and were only looking for libation when they got here, we decided to keep dinner simple and easy. Bread, butter, white wine and crab were all that was required, and what a feast it was.
Today, we're building special memories. Jeff and the big guy go back all the way to when they were four year old ankle biters living on the creek in Pendleton. It amazes me that a friendship can last as long as theirs has and honestly, when they get together it's like there's been no time in between. Giana, Jeff's lovely wife and I both love listening to their stories, but the best part of all is the laughter that comes with the memories. It is priceless!
After breakfast and pots and pots of coffee, we're off to walk the beach then enjoy lunch at the annual Yachats fish fry. It used to be smelts, but this year they've changed the menu to fish, chips, slaw, beer, wine and fabulous pies made by the local ladies.
Can't wait. Wonder what the peasants are doing today. One more thing...Linda...I bet I beat 'cha. Neener, neener, neener! LOL
