Greek cooking isn't something the big guy particularly enjoys - so he thinks, but cooking Greek isn't "greek to me". Sorry, I couldn't resist. I do love and appreciate the flavors of Mediterranean cooking, and as mentioned several days ago, lately I've had a real craving for Moussaka (or Baaassaka..depending on who's talking). I've made it several times, but this recipe has got to be the ultimate, certainly the best I've ever made!
While this dish takes some time in the kitchen, it is worth every second. My problem was that GMan decided to come home early and I really just wanted to sit and relax with him and discuss our day, rather than slave over a hot stove. Oh well...we like to eat, so I'm a good martyr. There are several steps to making a casserole of Moussaka - none are difficult, but they all take time. The biggest mistake I made was to cut the quantities in half - when you're going to this much trouble, you'd might as well make the whole darn recipe. You'll be happy to have it in the freezer for the days you don't feel like cooking. Download Moussaka
This would be spectacular party food. It's economical to make, and along with a Greek Salad and some fresh fruit, you'd have a menu guaranteed to please the tastebuds. We had it with a wedge salad of really fresh iceberg lettuce, a touch of bacon and a great tomato (GMan made the salad). It was one very, very memorable dinner, and best of all the geek's changed his mind about Greek!
