The big guy asked for a Mexican style shrimp dish called Camerones Diablo which supposedly translates to "demon with red peppers". It is a fiery hot dish of large shrimp, sauteed with garlic, peppers, onions and a spicy chile sauce. Somehow I shouldn't have been surprised that GMan would ask for it. I've never seen him admit that any spice is too hot for him. In fact, he never even breaks a sweat.
I was more into Italian than I was Mexican when planning the meals this week, so I did a one up on him and decided to make Shrimp Fra Diavolo instead. The shrimp is cooked in a tomato, white wine sauce with hints of crushed red peppers, oregano, parsley and basil, and while flavorful, it is certainly not in the "demon" department. I served it on a bed of spaghetti flavored with lemon rind, lemon juice, parmesan and fresh basil. All together, it was outstanding and more than worthy of "company". Of course, I could never serve it to company because it took less than 30 mintues to cook, and that includes cleaning and shelling the shrimp. When we have company for dinner for some strange reason I think the success of the entire evening depends totally on the number of hours I spend in the kitchen prior to their arrival. I always, always pick at least one dish I have never made before because I love the suspense of whether it's going to turn out or not. I know, I know. I must be sick. I usually have at least one melt down though so the big guy knows when to take the dog and run for the hills.
After dinner tonight, GMan was ready to run in another direction - back to Sprouts for more shrimp so we could have a repeat of this tomorrow night. Yup - it's that good!
