Yesterday was a day! I had a sick cat, a car sick dog, a b'zillion things to do, groceries to buy, a house to clean, laundry to do and a birthday cake to make. Why I thought I could get all that done in one day is beyond me, so last night's dinner kind of had to cook itself.
I had originally planned to make Toad in the Hole - just cause I'm kind of on a British kick these days, but that would have taken too much attention so instead we had this gorgeous red cabbage with some Bavarian style sausage.
Red cabbage is something I don't buy often enough and this particular version has red wine vinegar along with a little butter, red onion, apples, chicken stock and a touch of brown sugar. Set to simmer for an hour, it filled the house with a glorious aroma that may not be so great right now - oh darn why didn't I think of that? Anyway, it definitely didn't suffer from being neglected and was the perfect bed for some hearty Bavarian sausage. Download Caraway Red Cabbage
The sausage, made fresh daily at Sprouts Market was very mildly spiced and took to beer like a duck to water. I browned them first then poured in a can of beer and let it all simmer for about 20 minutes. The sausage were moist, tender and flavorful - obviously it's not just butter that makes things better!
Well people, I gotta' fly. I apologize for this singularly unimpressive post but I'm still working on that birthday cake which you'll see and hear about shortly and of course, there's a few other things to accomplish like maybe the dinner that supposed to precede the cake.
Sounds like you've got a lot of irons in the fire today. I hate days like that but man it sure does make a day go fast, doesn't it?
I'd probably scoot that cabbage onto hubby's plate and grab a big old brat bun for that sausage. YUM.

Yum!! This looks delicious! I have also been wanting to make toad in the hole - but this looks gorgeous! Does this fit into your healthy eating plan, though? :)

Mags - not a cooked cabbage lover are ya? Too bad - so full of good nutrients.
GT - I think Toad In the Hole will have to go on the back burner for a while but this was a good second choice and much healthier; not bad in the the calorie department - it helps that I know what they put/don't put into the sausage. As for the cabbage - I blew it and used 2 Tablespoons of butter and enjoyed every morsel! LOL
